You might have noticed that HUMAN TRAFFICKING, specifically child sex trafficking, has been a topic on many outlets lately and it is gaining more and more attention.

Addiction and human trafficking are connected and here in SW Florida RYAN Healing Center is committed to helping people trapped in addictions AS A RESULT of emotional and physical abuse, including human trafficking.

Drugs are used to control and manipulate people into human trafficking,
Addiction is used to keep people enslaved in human trafficking,
Addictions are used as a coping mechanism to the trauma even after being rescued.

Here is a list of examples from the OFFICE OF JUSTICE PROGRAMS on how “human trafficking victims who struggle with substance abuse might be exploited by a trafficker”:
  1. Recruitment through substance use:  Traffickers may target individuals with existing substance abuse issues to recruit into a trafficking situation.
  2. Control through substance addiction:  Traffickers may also use substance addiction to keep victims in a trafficking situation. It can be framed as a reward or punishment, or as a way to decrease the victim’s ability to resist trafficking and abuse.
  3. Substance abuse as a coping mechanism:  Some victims of human trafficking may abuse substances as a response to the trauma of their trafficking victimization.

Substance abuse can also lead to other health issues and if not addressed, some people might fall back into situations where their addiction can be taken advantage of and experience re-victimization.
